MIGRATION, INTEGRATION AND MULTICULTURALISM

Abstract

Today, everyone recognizes (but not everyone willingly accepts) the great social changes that have taken place in the world. One of them is the greater diversity of languages, cultures, nationalities and religions within nation-states, which threatens social and personal identities. Migrations are one of the causes of cultural diversity. Migration processes have taken place in the world since ancient times, but they have never been considered as problematic as nowadays. International movements of people have acquired specific characteristics in the current context of globalization, capital accumulation and transnationalism (Glick Schiller, Basch, & Szanton Blanc, 1999). Immigration has emerged as a hot issue for many states (Silverstein, 2005). Global migration governance is a topic of the political agenda at national and regional levels, inspiring debates about what is defined as “the problem of migration” (Pizarro, 2012).
